Lindemann PhD Fellowship

Erika Lindemann PhD Fellowship in Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

We are pleased to announce the inaugural Erika Lindemann Fellowship for an incoming PhD student in Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies. This fellowship honors Erika Lindemann, Professor Emeritus at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who is a national leader in rhetoric, composition and literacy studies, recipient of the CCCC Exemplar Award, and author of the award-winning book, A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers, now in its fourth edition.

The Lindemann Fellowship provides $20,000 of additional summer research funding (distributed over four years). Additionally, the Lindemann Fellow will follow a sequence of professional development opportunities to prepare them to be a superior teacher, researcher, and administrator. This sequence will include rotations in program administration, teaching resource material development, peer instructor mentoring, and program assessment, as well as involvement in faculty- and student-led research projects.

The PhD program in Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies is selective and highly individualized, fostering a close community of scholar-teachers. Our four award-winning tenure-line faculty members are exceptional mentors and have an outstanding record of placing graduates in tenure-line academic positions. Many of our students’ dissertations and subsequent monographs have won national awards. Click here to find out more about our program and community.

All rhetoric, composition, and literacy applicants to the PhD program in English and Comparative Literature will be considered for the Lindemann Fellowship. However, applicants are encouraged to mention their interest in the fellowship in their statement of purpose. To learn more about submitting an application, see this page.
